Characteristics of constipation: Constipation is defined as fewer than 3 bowel movements per week or the presence of hard stool requiring increased effort to pass it, a feeling of incomplete evacuation, or the need for manual stool evacuation.
Constipation affects more than 15 % of the adult population and has been reported in 30-40 % of people above 65 years of age. Constipation is 3 times more common in women than in men. Constipation is subdivided by cause into: functional constipation and organic constipation. Functional constipation is caused by slow passage of the digesting food, poor function of the pelvic floor muscles, and bad eating habits, and is most common in adults. Organic constipation, on the other hand, is a symptom of other diseases, such as CNS disorders, diseases of the rectum and colon, endocrine diseases, muscular diseases, psychiatric diseases, drug-induced diseases, and others. Prevention of constipation should include regular daily routines and diet, sufficient dietetic intake of fluids and fibre, and sufficient exercise.
